Yvonne Gerych

Artist statement:

Intrigued by the mortality of the flesh and the immortality of the spirit, by the enigmas of human existence and everlasting nature, Gerych attempts to explore existential themes. Her preoccupation with existentialism undoubtedly stems from her experiences while living under a communist dictatorship. From the ornate Baroque style of Prague churches to the rural simplicity of her grandparents’ farm in the country, all her upbringing informs her work. Striving to mediate accessibility to her innermost thoughts, Gerych ultimately views her ceramic sculptures as a gateway to the artist’s idiosyncratic emotions and the unfathomable ways of the creative process.

Denise Greenwood Loveless

Artist statement:

My work is about human imperfection and the ideas surrounding beauty & perfection. Having grown up with a handicapped sibling, I resent the package we are too often sold by media attempting to dictate how we perceive these completely subjective notions. My message is that we get to decide. In a society where 12-year-olds die of eating disorders, & our LGBTQ youth take their own lives because they can’t fit this skewed image of beauty & perfection, as an artist I feel an obligation to use this message in my work in the hopes of making some tiny change in the world around me.

Jessica Gutierrez is a ceramics artist based in Galveston, Texas. She creates functional ceramics in her home studio and as a Studio Assistant for Box Sparrow Studio in Houston, Texas. Inspired by clean lines, balanced abstract designs and modern silhouettes, she creates with intention while still allowing each piece to develop its own variation and story. Jessica believes in integrating every skill and hobby she has developed into her work as a ceramicist. In true form, you will find functional wheel-thrown and handbuilt pieces as well as those adorned with skillfully handlettered messages or filled with handpoured wood wick candles.

Maria Hernandez

Artist statement :

I create functional ware because I think it’s important to have an item you can turn to in comfort while working on your studies. Like eating yogurt out of a bowl while trying to solve a mathematical proof, or drinking orange juice out of a mug to get you through that art history essay. I am interested in the overlap across the different fields of academia. Combining elements from seemingly opposite subjects, such as math and art, invites the audience to examine the relationship between the emotional and logical viewpoints of life.
