BEYOND the SURFACE: IDENTITY THROUGH CLAY
October 20-21, 2018
This year we are excited to have Jennifer Ling Datchuk and Adam Field for our visiting artists: Jennifer and Adam are two prolific ceramic artists with diverse backgrounds and multi-faceted studio practices. Bridget Bray, the Nancy C. Allen Curator & Director of Exhibitions at the Asia Society Texas Center, will be our Keynote Speaker; and Anna Walker, the Windgate Foundation Curatorial Fellow for Contemporary Craft at the Museum of Fine Arts (Houston), will be our Panel Moderator.
Both Jennifer Ling Datchuk and Adam Field utilize surface in their work in expressive ways, and both use art to explore issues of identity and cultural history. Jennifer Ling Datchuk is a Professor at the Southwest School of Art in San Antonio, Texas. Datchuk works with porcelain and other materials to discuss fragility, beauty, femininity, and her personal history and experiences as an Asian-American woman. Adam Field is a full-time studio potter living in Helena, Montana. Field learned traditional Korean pottery techniques in Icheon, South Korea – today, he makes his own porcelain pottery and Onggi jars with hand-carved designs that are inspired by nature, geometry, and his travels.
