March 2018 Newsletter

With spring quickly approaching the ClayHouston 2018 calendar is filling up.

Before telling you about our upcoming events I wanted to take a moment to mention the tribute to Bill Dennard.  I was not lucky enough to know Bill but know many of you knew him and were inspired, encouraged and taught by him. The information is below.

Now for our upcoming events:

Laura Sprague, our Programs Chair, has many programs up her sleeve — the first being “Lunch and Tia Chi” Sunday, March 18th (info below). Tai Chi is also helpful in centering and focus and I know I can use both.

ClayHouston is participating in the HCCC Craft Community Day on March 3 from 11 AM to 3: PM. Drop by and visit all of the different guilds demonstrating their crafts.

Jessica Phillips, our Exhibition Chair, has arranged for a venue for our Annual Members Only Show “Collective Connection.”  It will be held at Sawyer Yards, Oct. 1st - Dec 16th. The call will be out later in the spring.

Ron Loyd, our Communications Chair, has been busy adding features to our website. This month we have “Our Member Spotlight” featuring Denise Greenwood Lovelace.  And “Area Art Shows” advertising local area exhibits. Check it out.

Happy Saint Paddy’s Day!

A Tribute To The Past,
With the New

Bill Dennard was the Head of the Ceramics Department at Glassell School of Art for nearly three decades. Students found him a generous soul devoted not only to teaching us but coaxing and guiding us to be better ceramicists. He was also a good friend. He left us all to soon in 2003. Students, friends and family of Bill Dennard would like to permanently honor his indelible impact on ceramicists and ceramics education in Houston.

The new Glassell School of Art opening in May will feature a glass block wall built from recovered brick from the old school where Bill taught. We have the opportunity to install one of these glass bricks in a lasting tribute of Bill's efforts in molding so many of us. I have started a GoFundMe site to help all of us influenced by Bill's tutelage to contribute.

Bill's name will become an integral part of the new Brown Foundation Plaza Wall next to the Cullen Sculpture Garden. Proceeds of this fund raiser go to the new Glassell School of Art.

We will meet at The Asia Market-rated “Best in Thai Food” at 12:30pm Sunday. Separate checks of course! After lunch we will head across the street to the large climate-controlled studio and Dody Carter will help us learn the short form, 24 movements, of Tai Chi that gently moves every joint in the body. Tai Chi is also helpful to help one center and focus. cool is that? Because it is done slowly, there is little chance for injury.

It's that time of year again when the Empty Bowls Committee starts gearing up for another great event, and it all starts with you.  We are asking for bowl donations of course! Last year we had over 1500 bowls donated in a variety of mediums -clay, wood, paper, metal and fiber and over 700 people attended the event. This year's event is being held Saturday May 19th at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, from 11-3.

Bowl donations may be dropped of at HCCC or at  the Ceramic Store from May 1st through May 17th.

Are you interested in taking on the 100 Bowl Challenge? If so, send us an email and we'll  give you all the details.

Thank you so much!!
