September 2018 Newsletter

Greetings,

Summer is winding down and we are on the brink of a very busy fall at ClayHouston. Before we get into the details I would like to thank V. Chin for sharing his studio and his 40-year journey from being a ceramic student in Japan to his progress and process in the USA. Lotus Bermudez (who also teaches there) was a fabulous hostess! Thank you both.

Now for fall business, Our general meeting is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 29th at the Glassell School of Art, 10:00 am to noon and will include a tour of the school as well as an opportunity for you to show a piece of your current work at an informal show and tell.

At the last general meeting, we learned a lot of what you as members wanted from ClayHouston and have implemented many of those things. These include the Studio Crawl, now the Bayou City Studio Crawl, continuing annual symposiums, workshops with Eric Stearns & Alberto Bustos, programs including V Chin, Angel Oloshove, Tour of Box 13, Swap Shop and Member Spotlight on our website, a very active Facebook page and our Pop Up Marketplace.

The Board has been working on a strategic plan for our future growth and direction and for that, we need your input. We will be sending out a survey prior to the general meeting to get your input. Please take a few minutes to fill it out. Also, please plan to attend the General Meeting, see Glassell, look at members work and give input on the future of ClayHouston.

Three Journeys brings together a ceramicist, a painter, and a printmaker, three women working in three different media whose work is connected by the theme of the journey. For each artist, this theme has a unique meaning. For Evans, the journey focuses on her physical and mental health since battling cancer. For Reeder, the meaning is similar, with her work inspired by the journey from loss to renewal after being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. The journey for Sivov, who has moved around all of her life, is about finding belonging and a sense of home.
