May 2021 NEWSLETTER

Dear ClayHouston members,

I hope you are doing well as the weather turns warm and summer approaches!

The entries for the ClayHouston Award for Texas BIPOC Ceramic Artists demonstrated the amazing depth of talent that exists in our state and we are pleased to announce that the jurors have made their selections. The winners of the award are:

Mid-Career and Beyond:  Tammie Rubin

Emerging:  Jihye Han

The jurors, Natalia Arbelaez, Adam Chau, Jennifer Ling Datchuk and Roberto Lugo, had a difficult time choosing from the exceptional pool of applications. In response, they made a request that we also create an additional category of honor. We're thrilled to announce that an award of Honorable Mention has been awarded to Earnest Snell.

We’re so grateful to all of the award entrants for sharing their inspiring work with us and to our amazing jurors who worked hard to make the award selections.

I’m also excited to announce that ClayHouston will be partnering with The Moody Center for The Arts at Rice University to host a community clay workshop in conjunction with their upcoming exhibition Brie Ruais: Movement at the Edge of Land. The workshop will take place during the Dimensions Variable event on June 12th from 4-6pm. We are looking for a few volunteers to help facilitate the clay play and will be sending out a sign-up form soon. Please note that the event will be in-person but we will be following Rice University’s COVID-19 protocols of mask wearing and social distancing.

We are also starting a new format for ClayTalks this month. It will still be the same fun, casual get-together and sharing of work & techniques but we’re adding a bit of structure. We’ve selected a theme this month of “Mugs in May” and will begin our conversation by sharing some tips and tricks for mug construction. Feel free to join us to share or listen or bring along your favorite mug for show and tell! We’re also launching a hashtag this month on social media: #CHMugsinMay let’s see what you all are up to out there - post your favorite mugs and mug-related content and tag us so we can share with everyone!

I hope you can get out and enjoy the sunshine this month and hope to see you soon!
