Artist Talk with Martha Skogen
Timeless Yet Modern

Join The Glassell School of Art and ClayHouston to hear an Artist Talk by Martha Skogen.

This presentation takes a broad look at the core principles that reside at the heart of all types of visual communication. In this visually colorful talk, Martha, a former Associate Professor, draws upon her lifelong study, practice, and research in art and design.

Topics cover basic visual relational concepts including: proportions, psychological perception (Gestalt), structure & organization, "The Pillars" of composition, etc. Filled with examples from art to nature, across eons to the modern day, from afar to your favorite art studio, Martha's talk will open your eyes to the universal principles that exist underneath all that we see.

About the Artist
As an interdisciplinary artist, Martha's interests span a wide range of creative activities that include design, poetry, and ceramics, etc. Her formal education in graphic design led to her earning a doctorate in 2017 from NTNU, The Norwegian University of Science & Technology. Martha is fascinated by the timeless compositional principles that form the core of all visual relationships, regardless of media. She likes to think of it as a search for the ‘red thread’ that underlies creativity itself. Her ceramics and glass work are currently in galleries near her studio in Norway, where she has lived for 25 years. In her art, she pushes material and structural boundaries as far as they will go. She also conducts workshops with international audiences and schools, one of which led to her recent book, The Glass Tree (2022). Martha is passionate about inclusivity and creative empowerment, especially with children.
