Workshop with Christina Orthwein
In this workshop you will design, transfer and carve a custom plaster press mold and then build a 6 sided curved slab mug from that mold. Additionally you will get to make a custom silicone tool to take home with you.
Christina Orthwein teaches Photography and Ceramics at Bryn Athyn College and works out of her home studio. She has been working in the clay medium for over 20 years creating in her unique style in everything from jewelry, and functional wares as well as large figurative sculpture. An engaging presenter and teacher, Christina will share her tips and expertise and help you take your own own ceramics to the next level.
Workshop Schedule:
Saturday May 10th, 2025 from 10:00 - 5:00 pm
Demonstration by Christina of the entire detailed process from sketching, transfer, to assembly.
Design a simple, small pendant to practice the design/transfer/carving process on a small plaster block.
Lunch 1:00-2:00pm
Choose templates and design two molds to be carved for a 6 sided mug,
Additional demonstrations about making a base and pulling a handle
Transfer designs onto larger plaster blocks, carve, press, and build the mugs.
The participants will leave with molds for both their pendant design and their mug with sample constructions of both. Christina will include tips for glazing, drying and firing.
Note: Tools, clay and equipment and lunch provided. If you have your own special tools feel free to bring them.
